Success on the night…

On a hot summer evening, over 60 people gave their support for our first Astwood Bank Rotary Quiz fundraising event for OUR memory cafe…

Every new group has to start somewhere as they begin the journey towards realising the vision that initially motivated them. For the Astwood Bank Rotary team the vision is a Memory Café in the heart of our community and the start of the journey was to raise the seed-funds needed to get the Café up and running, and on Friday 6th July a family friendly quiz night did just that!

Every event needs good planning and commitment, our team of enthusiastic volunteers provided both and the success of the Rotary Quiz Night, raising just shy of £450 didn’t disappoint. All the planning and commitment though is nothing without the support of those who sign-up to take part and we want to give a massive THANK YOU to everyone who came along with their team and bought refreshments & raffle tickets – we put in the graft, you put in the money!

Plans are ongoing to launch the Astwood Bank Memory Café in the autumn of 2018 as part of the wider Rotary programme REPoD. It will start as a once a month programme giving opportunity for those being or caring for older people or people with dementia; a place to connect with others in a safe and inclusive environment. To make the plans become a reality there is a need not only for money to ensure sustainability but for volunteer helpers as well. If you believe you might be able to assist on the first Thursday of a month, 2pm – 4pm (starting October 2018) then fill in the form below to register your interest.

The Memory Café will offer a drop-in facility giving opportunity to chat with neighbours and take a trip or two down memory lane. We need to invest in resources for visitors to enjoy such a memory boxes, as well as ensuring there are the basics requirements of a regular venue and refreshments. Our programme is being designed to provide stimulating activities aimed at improving memory skills and will benefit from professional input and volunteer time. Partners and carers will be included with specialist advice available to the group, along with the development of a peer-support network.

We are aiming to make the Astwood Bank Memory Café free at the point of need, but this is only possible with on-going community support.  If you can help in any way, then please get in touch to help make Astwood Bank a dementia friendly community…
